In honor of Halloween we asked Dan to pick ten sakes that represent all of the scary elements of the sake world. From names to colors this Top Ten list will scare your palate wide open. Boo!

 

1. Murai Family Nigori Genshu

  • Come on! Look at that label. That’s some scary stuff and it’s nigori!

 

2. Hannya “Spicy Ume Shu”

  • Are you kidding me? Look at that mask! Scary!! And considering this is a spicy sweet ume shu it is crazy for Halloween

 

3. Chiyomusubi “Oyagi” One Cup

  • Is it me or is that an eye ball? Ahhhhhhhhh! An eye ball!!!.

 

4. Choya Ume Shu

  • Okay! You ready to get scared? Those plums in the Ume Shu look like eyeballs!

 

5. Genbai Onikoroshi Honjozo

  • Commonly referred to as four eyes this mask is super scary!

6. Kariho Namahage Yamahai Junmai "Devil's Mask"

  • Another killer label that may make a killing on Halloween!

 

7. Homare Strawberry Nigori

  • What’s Halloween without a little blood or red nigori sake?

 

8. Bunraku Junmai “Forgotten Japanese Spirit”

  • Cool bottle but a forgotten ghost! How cool is that? Boo!

 

9. Kokuryu Junmai Ginjo “Black Dragon”

  • Not all dragons and sweet and comical! Some are terrifying! Ahhhhh!

 

10. Tengumai Yamahai Junmai “Dance of the Demon”

  • Hello scariest name in the store! Halloween is perfect to dance like a demon!
