April 2105 - Sake Meets the Tax Man

Posted by Beau Timken in 2015, April, Monthly Intro, Newsletter

Welcome to the 128th Issue of America’s sake-centric Newsletter. In this taxing issue read how taxes have played a major role in the sake industry; explore water, sake and droughts; see a quick – really quick – video about BT; follow BT in London for the International Wine Challenge; taste real sake brewing water from Yamagata; and lastly see if you can really taste the difference between hand made and machine made sake.

Consider this...

Sake brewing rice is more expensive than consumption rice. Five years ago a 60kg bag of first grade Yamadanishiki cost $300, and a 60kg bag of regular food rice Nihombare cost $185. Typically sake brewing rice is about 20% more expensive than its food partner.
