Nina reached out and asked if we could tell all of our fellow sake lovers, fans, geeks, and souls about an event that she created to celebrate sake with a killer event that speaks to the sake passionate and the sake lovers.
We wish you a successful event and Good luck!

Fuyu Fest is a Winter-themed sake and culture festival in Portland, Oregon, taking place on Saturday, January 20th, 2024. There's sake tasting of course!-- over 65 different types have been curated by Sunflower Sake, and is included

with your ticket -- but Fuyu Fest is also about culture, education, experiences, food and art. At Fuyu Fest we explore all sorts of different ways to engage with sake, beyond just tasting.

So why a Winter sake festival, in dry January, when it's so cold and gloomy in the Pacific Northwest?Well, that's just the thing. Here in Oregon we have a cold and dark, but also beautiful and peaceful Winter. Winter is gloomy, but it's also cozy... coated in snow, full of Winter steelhead, steamy with hot pot and warm cocktails. The Japanese traditions of yukimizake (sake while snow watching), sake onsen (sake while bathing in an onsen), kanzake (sake warming), and the release of fresh shiboritate brews make Winter a fantastic time to embrace sake in -- and visit -- the PNW.

At the 2024 festival we're going to have demos from Okan Lover, a kanzake specialist & chef based out of Tokyo; sake cocktail demos from award-winning local mixologists (including Jim Meehan, author of Meehan's Bartender Manual); a winter steelhead breakdown from an accomplished washoku chef, and tons more. Sake Soul of the Year 2023 Marcus Pakiser is returning for his second year to regale us with stories, while Nina Murphy of Sunflower Sake, Andrew Neyens of Tahoma Fuji Sake, and many others, will discuss sake in talks and panels.

Fuyu Fest is a project from Sunflower Sake, Portland's only dedicated sake shop and tasting room. I'm a long-time lover of True Sake and a Bay Area native, and I founded Sunflower in October 2021 after several years of working in wine because I really wanted to see a community outpost of our own: somewhere for Oregonians to taste, learn, attend sake classes, get hype about your trip to Japan or the koji coffee you just bought. Or simply to become a part of our friendly little community, which is really just an extension of the same community you'll find at True Sake in SF (we have already adopted many a Bay Area expat!) I view Sunflower as a second-generation sake shop inspired by the trailblazers who set up 10-20 years ago, sharing all the same passion and goals, but with a different perspective. So next time you're in Portland, please come say hello! 👋☺️
